Costa Rica is blessed with probably the best year round climate of any country in the world due to it’s tropical location between 9 & 11 degrees north of The Equator with a typical year round average temperature of low to upper 20’s C. The mountain areas are naturally cooler.
Indeed at the top of the many mountains of Costa Rica above say 5000 feet, it’s positively chilly at times but the great news is that as you descend, you’re never far away from the sunshine & warmth but do come prepared as certain species of birds are only found at the higher altitudes. For example, temperature wise, at the base of a mountain or volcano, it may be 30 degrees c plus & at the top as low as 10 degrees! Come prepared…
The country boasts 10% of the world’s bird population. (Land mass about the size of Wales in The UK or West Virginia in The States). We have 903 different avian species, not all here at the same time of course, some 630 are endemic & highly localised, the remainder using the country as either a migratory corridor or to over winter, escaping either & predominantly the North American winter & alternatively the differing timed South American winter
(When you look at Costa Rica on a map & see the relative size of it, it really is amazing how much biodiversity exists in such a small country but when you come here, we’ll explain & you’ll understand why. Anecdotally, several of our hidden away little gems have sightings of between 300 & 400 different species).
Our Costa Rican birds are typically a little more bold than the birds you find at home, having plenty of cover making them feel less threatened by mankind. Hunting is also illegal in Costa Rica (Hoorah), so the birds have less intrinsic fear of mankind.
